Southern Railway 6133 75th Anniversary Photo Charter

Saturday, July 19, 2025

5:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m.

On Saturday, July 19, 2025, the North Carolina Transportation Museum will host a special evening and night photo charter honoring the 75th anniversary of Southern Railway FP7 No. 6133 — one of only five Southern FP7s still in operation and the only one still proudly wearing its iconic Southern Railway livery. As the sun sets over the historic Spencer Shops, 6133 will take the spotlight, pulling a variety of authentic freight and passenger consists through multiple staged scenes across the museum’s 60-acre campus.  Designed with photographers and rail enthusiasts in mind, this charter offers golden hour run-by’s, professionally lit night scenes, and exclusive access to prime photo locations that showcase this legendary locomotive in its finest light.

Throughout the evening, No. 6133 will rotate between three fully staged and historically accurate consists: a heavyweight Pullman-era consist, a vintage freight train, and a streamlined stainless passenger train. These setups will be staged across multiple locations around the museum’s 60-acre site, so please be prepared for a significant amount of walking.  At least one area will require boarding and deboarding of historic passenger cars.*

Built-in 1950, FP7 No. 6133 represents a turning point in American railroading — a blend of power, streamlined design, and modern passenger service that helped define the postwar Southern Railway’s identity. Still proudly wearing her original green and white paint scheme, 6133 remains a rare and significant example of first-generation diesel preservation. This photo charter isn’t just about capturing great images — it’s about honoring the locomotive’s 75-year legacy and sharing a moment that brings the spirit of classic railroading vividly to life.

Professional lighting will be provided.  Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Barber Junction Visitor Center, and the photo charter begins at 6:00 p.m.  Experience with photographing scenes with flood and flash lighting is highly recommended.

This is a rain or shine event, and there are no refunds or exchanges.

*Please note:  The passenger cars used on the photo trains are not ADA-accessible due to the use of historic and antiquated rail passenger equipment, which is exempt from ADA regulations under US Code: Title 42: Section 12184.
