Riding the Southern – 1966-1979
Historical presentation and dinner train
May 18, 2024
Bill Schafer of the Southern Railway Historical Association presents “Riding the Southern – 1966-1979.” Bill will share his experiences riding Southern Railway passenger trains to and from his home in Maryland and Davidson College (1966-1970), then mixing business and pleasure on hundreds of trips aboard the Southern Crescent and other Southern trains (1971-1979.)
After the presentation, enjoy dinner on the train as it tours the North Carolina Transportation Museum. You’ll enjoy steak, twice baked potato, salad, and dessert onboard a railroad dining car. Tea and water will be included as part of the meal, with beer and wine available for an additional price.
Program: 5:30PM – 6:15PM in the Master Mechanic’s Office
Dinner Train: 6:30PM – 7:30PM departing from the Master Mechanic’s Office
Tickets can be purchased for the program only, or for the program and the dinner train as a combination. Tickets to this event do not include the night photo shoot sold separately.
Dinner train seating is limited. Seats at tables are purchased individually and, in classic “dining car” style, you may be seated with patrons outside of your party. Relive the dining car experience of meeting new people as you enjoy dinner on the train. Program seating is general admission.
Unfortunately the historic rail car used for the dinner experience is not ADA accessible and is exempt from ADA requirements due to the vintage nature of its construction. Passengers must be able to board and deboard the train using steps into and out of the rail car.
This is a rain-or-shine event. There are no refunds or exchanges.
Night Photo Shoot
May 18, 2024 (7PM-11PM)
Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Bob Julian Roundhouse with a special night photo shoot featuring Southern Railway and other historic railroad equipment posed under lights. Photos will take place at the Bob Julian Roundhouse, built in 1924, and at the Barber Junction station, built in 1898 and relocated to the museum for use as its visitor center.
Professional lighting will be provided. The photo session begins at 7PM and ends at 11PM. Experience with photographing scenes with flood and flash lighting is highly recommended.
Photographers must check in at the Barber Junction Visitor Center beginning at 6:30PM and will be issued special wristbands for the photo shoot. Only ticketed participants for the night photo session will be permitted to attend. This event is separate from any other events taking place on the same day.
This event will require significant amounts of walking with camera gear, so please wear comfortable shoes and prepare for being outdoors.
This is a rain or shine event, and there are no refunds or exchanges.
